HEALTH POLICY IN A GLOBALIZING WORLD (GLOBAL HEALTH FELLOWS PROGRAM)

We would appreciate your assistance in sharing this announcement calling for applications for the 2014 cohort of the Duke Global Health Fellows Program in Geneva with potentially interested students and listservs.

Co-sponsored by the Duke Global Health Institute, the Sanford School of Public Policy, and the Program on Global Health and Technology Access, the Global Health Fellows Program in Geneva, Switzerland is now accepting applications for its summer 2014 cohort.

HEALTH POLICY IN A GLOBALIZING WORLD (GLOBAL HEALTH FELLOWS PROGRAM)

Overview

In the summer of 2014, Duke University’s Sanford School of Public Policy will bring the tenth cohort of Global Health Fellows to Geneva. Combining internships with various global health stakeholder organizations in Geneva like the World Health Organization and the UN High Commission for Refugees and an intensive course on global health issues, the program is a unique opportunity to learn firsthand how global health policy is formulated and implemented.

Today’s global health challenges not only include delivering existing treatments to those living with HIV/AIDS and traveling the last mile to polio eradication, but also addressing the tobacco epidemic and the double burden of obesity and malnutrition. The Global Health Fellows Program will provide students with both academic and experiential perspective on how intergovernmental institutions, public-private partnerships, and non-governmental organizations shape both global health policy and programs responding to such challenges in globalization and health equity.

Participants

Past program participants have included graduate and professional students from a broad range of disciplines, including law, medicine, public health, public policy, international affairs, business, environmental studies, social work, nursing, veterinary studies, and other fields preparatory for future leadership roles in global health and public service.

Components

The Global Health Fellows Program offers students assistance in matching to internships in Geneva-based institutions, the opportunity to learn directly from experts tackling some the world's most significant challenges in global health and to build a professional network, and a cohort of exceptionally talented and diverse future leaders in global health.

The program includes:

--An 8-12 week health policy internship in Geneva

--Events over the summer providing opportunities to socialize and network with other policy interns, experts in global health, and mentors

--An intensive, weeklong course, titled “Health Policy in a Globalizing World," with expert seminars and site visits

Applications

Policy internships typically fall in the window between mid-May and mid-August.  The course week takes place in early July. There is flexibility on the start and ending dates for individual students, but attendance during the one-week course is required.

Applications for the summer 2014 program are due Monday, November 25, 2013 by 5 pm EST and require two letters of recommendation.
